With Coachella about a month away I can hardly compose my excitement of attending the event for the first time. With an abundance of act ranging from alternative rock to EDM to hip-hop the diversity is what make the event a music destination annually for tens of thousands of people. With that being said I will be going through the top 5 acts I am most excited to see at Coachella 2017.
5. DJ Khaled
Notable Work: Number 1 Album Major Key released 2016, 2 time Grammy Nominated performer, King of SnapChat
Before you criticize my inclusion of the man who has very few ad-libs, but somehow manages to repeat them hundreds of time throughout a song, the reason I included DJ Khaled is the possibilities of who will be joining him on stage for his set. With a performer who doesn’t do anything, but repeat ad-libs and produces you end up have thousands of features on your album and that is one thing Khaled is a genius at making sure that he has the best ensemble of talent for his posse cuts. The possibilities are endless and from his last album alone the chances of performers joining Khaled on stage range from; Jay Z, Nas, Lil Wayne, J. Cole, YG to acts who will already be performing at Coachella like Future, Gucci Mane, Travis Scott. The possibilities are endless and that makes for an anticipated set for sure.
4. DJ Snake
Notable Work: 3 Top 5 Billboard Hot 100 singles, 2 time Grammy Nominated performer
This French house DJ is currently one of the go to DJ’s for pop artists when you want to have a hit on your hands. His hits range from the party starter “Turn Down for What” to the Major Lazer assisted “Lean On” to the chart smash “Let Me Love You” featuring Justing Bieber. With a style so rhythmic and infectious you would be hard-pressed to hear a DJ Snake song come on in the club or on the radio and not find yourself singing and dancing along. After seeing a few videos of him performing live and the release of his 4th single “The Half” from his 2016 album Encore the anticipation of seeing him in a live setting is constantly growing.
3. Martin Garrix
Notable Work: DJ Mag‘s 2016 number 1 DJ of 2016, Numerous Top DJ honors,
Arguably one of the top DJ’s in the industry who came on to the scene in 2012 at the young age of 16 has risen to a height in a few short year that has him second to none when it comes to live performances. The way he remixes songs and makes them his own has given him a distinct sound that makes him the top EDM performer not only at Coachella, but around the world. With chart hits “Animals” and “In The Name of Love” he is able to appeal to mainstream fans and hardcore EDM fans.
2. ScHoolboy Q
Notable Work: Critically Acclaimed 2016 album Blank Face LP, 5 time Grammy Nominated including 2 Best Rap Album Nominations, Member of Black Hippy
In 2016 Groovy Q positioned himself as one of the top hip-hop artists of 2016 and moved up the rankings within the TDE camp. As far as his place in comparison to his Black Hippy cohorts I personally ranked them Kendrick, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, then ScHoolboy. I always felt that ScHoolboy never really lived up to the potential that he was capable of achieving until his release of Blank Face LP in which he showed his range of making a hit song like “THat Part” to his ability of hood story telling like on “JoHn Muir”. The strength of his album makes his performance at Coachella a must see.
1 . Kendrick Lamar
Notable Work: 3 Critically Acclaimed albums; good kid, m.A.A.d city, To Pimp a Butterfly, untitled unmastered, 7 Grammy Award wins, Member of Black Hippy
Kendrick Lamar is just hitting the prime of his career, even with the catalog and accomplishments that already puts up among the some of the greatest to ever do it, it seems that he capable of even more. And when arguably one of the top rap artists of this generation is performing on a stage near you it is for sure an event you shouldn’t pass up. When Kendrick hits the main stage at Coachella it will be a moment in time that will compared to Rembrandt painting a masterpiece, but instead of paint brushes and paint it he will be conducting his masterpiece with a mic and lyrical skill. And with hints of a new album on the way and some speculation that it may be released in time for his Coachella performance makes the next month an exciting one.
